MOUNT VERNON, Ohio — Mount Vernon Nazarene University alumnus Peter Stevens (’02) brings his exhibit “Inside/Outside” to MVNU’s Schnormeier Gallery, 221 S. Main St., Mount Vernon, from Aug. 9 to Sept. 9, 2016. An Artist Talk with Stevens will be held Thursday, Sept. 1, 2016, at 6:30 p.m., and a reception for the show will take place Friday, Sept. 2, 2016, from 6-9 p.m.
Stevens began working on the exhibit while pursuing a Master of Fine Arts degree from Azusa Pacific University in Azusa, Calif., in 2012. “Inside/Outside” is a selection of old and new works, including sculptural textile, fabric, and more.
“The show is about the internal experience as a person with the external expressions. The things we go through in life in growing as a person actually have an impact on the way we dress and the way we talk. The inside of being a person and the outside of being a person,” Stevens said.
“When I moved back to Ohio in 2013, I continued making work but what I discovered was how different the work was, based on where I was living — a lot of work I’ve been doing is a reflection of where I’ve been. It’s a body of work that’s been growing over the past five years,” Stevens said.
Stevens said his work takes on themes such as Christian faith and human identity and interprets them into fabric and sewing.
“My exhibit can also relate to being on the inside of the Christian faith and exploring what it means to be in the center of a Christian community and receiving the call from Jesus to go outside the walls of the church and experience what is uncomfortable, and the command to find places to help us grow as faithful people,” Stevens said.
Stevens’ work will be on display at Schnormeier Gallery weekdays from noon to 4:30 p.m., and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
