Wittenberg Professor Raises Money to Fight Domestic Violence

Assistant Professor of Art Daniel McInnis is bringing his work home with him. After teaching at Wittenberg for six years, McInnis’ artwork graces the walls of the Ann Miller Gallery in Koch Hall, the place where he teaches, inspires and gives students the tools to express themselves creatively and professionally.

Battleground, a compilation of photographs taken using McInnis’ iPhone, “documents glimpses of an American state in transition, a landscape mixed with both troubling anxiety and healthy pride.” The exhibit, which was introduced with a lecture by McInnis on Monday, Nov. 11, is open to the public free of charge from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays through Saturday, Dec. 6.

McInnis said Instagram and iPhone photography have become acceptable forms of art.

“Most artists and publishers agree that it has less to do with how expensive your camera is, and more about what you do with the tools you have,” said McInnis, who is the director of the Ann Miller Gallery. “While Ohio might not sport the boisterous architecture of Chicago or New York and isn’t endowed with the more dramatic geology of the American West, there are things to see here. These are images of the in-between places in what has come to be known as a political battleground state. Sometimes, according to what media outlet to which you are referring, the battleground.”

The artwork was produced from a very relatable and accessible source that all college students can connect with, but it doesn’t stop there. With Battleground, McInnis reiterates what Wittenberg is all about:  giving back to the community.

Each image in the gallery is available for sale, ranging in price from $20 to $60. All proceeds from sales of artwork in the Battleground gallery will be donated to Project Woman, a Springfield organization created to aid victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.

McInnis has taught photographic practice and history at the School of Visual Arts in New York, John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York, The American University in Dubai, and Ithaca College. His work has been published by Saint Lucy, Dodho Magazine as a Featured Photographer, and Battleground, a self-published monograph by Apple Books. McInnis was a 2012 Competition Winner for Photo Review and a finalist in the PhotoPlace Open 2012 Catalog by Blurb Books.
